Harry Potter ornaments go on our tree every year, and a mug is the same kind of gift: small, cheap enough, and it gets used. My wife did the Harry Potter read-aloud in our house, and we watched all eight films as a family.
Most of the Harry Potter mugs on Amazon now come from outside sellers or have gone out of stock. These five are the ones worth buying today, with the size and the washing rules for each, because most of them are hand wash only.
The Short Answer
- Everyday coffee or cocoa: the Silver Buffalo Hedwig handle mug, 20 oz with an owl for a handle.
- A gift with a surprise: the Marauder’s Map heat-reveal mug. It looks black until the hot drink goes in.
- For the car: the Solemnly Swear travel mug, the only one here that can go in the dishwasher.
- For soup or a big hot chocolate: the cauldron soup mug, which comes with a lid and a spoon.
Everyday Mug: Hedwig Handle
The handle is a sculpted Hedwig, and the side carries the Hogwarts crest and the school motto. It holds 20 oz, which is a big mug. Silver Buffalo says hand wash only and no microwave or dishwasher, so this is the one to keep away from anyone who loads the dishwasher without looking.
Heat-Reveal Gift: Marauder’s Map Mug
To everyone else it is a plain black 11 oz mug. Pour in something hot and the Marauder’s Map appears. That reveal is the whole point, so it makes a better gift than an everyday mug. Hand wash only, the maker says, and keep it out of the microwave. Trend Setters sells it and Amazon ships it.
Travel Mug: Solemnly Swear
An 18 oz ceramic travel mug printed with Marauder’s Map artwork (no heat reveal on this one), with a locking lid and a skid-resistant bottom. It fits most car cup holders, and the maker lists it as microwave and dishwasher safe, which makes it the easy one to live with.
Cauldron Mugs
Cauldron Soup Mug with Lid and Spoon
Molded and painted to look like a cauldron, with a lid and a spoon in the box. At 16 oz it fits soup or a big hot chocolate. Hand wash only.
Black Cauldron Mug
At 12 oz, this cauldron skips the lid and spoon that come with the soup mug. Also hand wash only.
Washing and Care
Read this before it goes in the gift bag, because four of the five should never go in the dishwasher.
- Dishwasher and microwave safe: the Solemnly Swear travel mug.
- Hand wash only: the Hedwig handle mug, the Marauder’s Map mug and both cauldron mugs.
- Never in the microwave: the Hedwig mug and the Marauder’s Map mug, according to their makers.

About These Recommendations
I’m George, a dad of two. My wife did most of the reading to our kids when they were little, and I did my share. She’s a therapist, and she helps pick the books that actually matter for their development. Some of what’s on this site we’ve read, watched or played as a family. Some I tried on my own first. The rest comes from research: reviews, episode guides, other parents online, and whatever the kids bring home from school.
