My wife did the Harry Potter read-aloud in our house, and we watched all eight films as a family. A Harry Potter lamp is one of the few pieces of merch that a kid actually uses every day.
The trouble is that most of the Harry Potter lamps on Amazon come from outside sellers, and a lot of the old favorites are gone. Everything below is sold by Amazon.com itself, four lamps that each do a different job.
The Short Answer
- For reading in bed: the Golden Snitch Lumi Clip. It clips onto the book and runs on USB or batteries.
- For a desk or bedside table: the Harry Potter Stick Table Lamp, a plug-in lamp with a pull chain.
- For a night light: the Hedwig Room Guard Light, which can also flash and play Harry Potter sounds when someone walks in.
- For a shelf glow: the Potion Bottles Mood Lamp, seven bottles that light up on a base.
For Reading: Golden Snitch Lumi Clip
This is the one I would buy first for a kid who reads in bed. A small LED light clips onto the book, so the rest of the room stays dark, and it runs on USB (the cable comes in the box) or on 3 AAA batteries, which you buy separately. Batteries are the better choice in bed, because there is no cord. It is the first card above.
For a Desk or Table: Harry Potter Stick Table Lamp
A red metal stick lamp with Harry Potter graphics, about 15.5 inches tall. It plugs into the wall and switches on with a pull chain, which is easy for a kid to reach. No bulb comes with it, and the listing calls for a standard E26 at 40 watts.
Night Lights
Hedwig Room Guard Light
Hedwig has two modes. In night-light mode she gives a soft white glow. In guard mode a motion sensor makes her flash red and play Harry Potter sounds when someone comes through the door. She stands 5.1 inches tall and runs on USB (cable included) or 3 AAA batteries. Fair warning: in guard mode, she will go off when you walk in to check on them at night.
Potion Bottles Mood Lamp
Seven small potion bottles sit on an 11.8-inch base and light up in three modes: a steady warm glow, a slow alternating glow, or a fast flicker. Switch it to steady mode and it works as a night light for a shelf or windowsill. Power is 3 AAA batteries, not included, and the listing says ages 3 and up.
Before It Goes in a Kid’s Room
A few practical things to check, because a lamp lives in the room a lot longer than most gifts do.
- Power: the Lumi Clip, Hedwig and the Potion Bottles can all run on batteries, so there is no cord near the bed. Only the Stick Table Lamp has to plug into the wall.
- Bulb: the Stick Table Lamp comes without a bulb. Pick one before the gift gets opened.
- Batteries: none of these include batteries. Buy a pack of AAAs with them.
- Brightness: only the Lumi Clip and the Stick Table Lamp are bright enough to read by. The other two are for glow.

About These Recommendations
I’m George, a dad of two. My wife did most of the reading to our kids when they were little, and I did my share. She’s a therapist, and she helps pick the books that actually matter for their development. Some of what’s on this site we’ve read, watched or played as a family. Some I tried on my own first. The rest comes from research: reviews, episode guides, other parents online, and whatever the kids bring home from school.
FAQ
Clip-on reading lights, table lamps, mood lamps and night lights. This page covers one or two of each that Amazon.com sells itself.
Start with the job. A kid who reads in bed needs a reading light like the Lumi Clip. A glow on a shelf is a different lamp. Then check the power source and whether a bulb or batteries are included.
The battery lamps here keep cords away from the bed. The Potion Bottles Mood Lamp is listed for ages 3 and up. The Stick Table Lamp plugs into the wall and needs its own bulb.
Not these four. The Lumi Clip and the Hedwig light include a USB cable, so they work without batteries. The Potion Bottles Mood Lamp needs 3 AAA batteries.
