Manga was the best hit of everything anime we have brought home, and we have the box sets on the shelf. My son read 40 volumes of One Piece in two weeks. When a reader goes at that speed, the only question is which manga to buy.

So these gifts for manga lovers are sorted by who you are buying for: someone just starting, someone already deep in a series, and someone who owns everything.

The Short Answer

If you know the series they love, buy the box set. If you don’t, buy volume 1 of a finished series. For a reader who already owns their favorites, get a good book light or a how-to-draw book.

Demon Slayer Complete Box Set (Vol. 1-23)

Demon Slayer Complete Box Set (Vol. 1-23)

Complete series in one purchase, no waiting for volumes. Includes exclusive poster and booklet. The manga has scenes the anime skipped. Great value compared to buying all 23 individually.
Heavy box set, not portable. The manga is less colorful than the anime (obviously). Some panels are intense for younger readers.

For a New Reader

One volume costs little and tells you a lot.

My daughter’s favorite series right now is Witch Hat Atelier, and volume 1 is an easy way in. Spy x Family is the light, funny option. Jujutsu Kaisen Vol. 0 is a one-book prequel, so it works for a fan of the show who wants to try the manga without committing. If they finish one fast and ask for the next, you know what to buy for the following birthday. Our guide to a first manga has more ideas.

Witch Hat Atelier, Vol. 1

Witch Hat Atelier, Vol. 1

Paperback volume 1, the start this age guide actually recommends. Kodansha rates it 10+. A first try before anyone talks about the rest of the pile.
The first chapters turn a parent to stone. It looks like a picture book and it is not. Volume 1 is the test, not the Grimoire box.
Spy x Family Manga Vol. 1

Spy x Family Manga Vol. 1

Genuinely funny for both kids and adults. We rate the anime 12+ for cartoon action violence. Great art and expressive characters. Anya is one of the most beloved manga characters in years.
Ongoing series with no end date announced. Each volume is short (about 200 pages). Story can feel episodic rather than building to a big climax.
Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Vol. 0

Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Vol. 0

Great starting point, works as a standalone story. Adapted into a hit movie. Sets up the world before the main series. Shorter commitment than jumping into the full series.
Different protagonist than the main series (Yuta vs Yuji). Very dark themes and violence, not for younger readers. Only one volume, so it ends quickly.

When you are ready to go bigger, a first box set is the step up. One Piece Box Set 1 covers volumes 1 to 23, Naruto Box Set 1 covers volumes 1 to 27, and My Hero Academia Box Set 1 covers volumes 1 to 20. All three are long series, so this is a start.

One Piece Box Set 1: East Blue and Baroque Works (Vol. 1-23)

One Piece Box Set 1: East Blue and Baroque Works (Vol. 1-23)

The best way to start One Piece without 1000+ anime episodes. Covers the first major story arcs that hooked millions of readers. Includes exclusive extras. Much faster than watching the anime.
23 volumes is just the beginning of a 100+ volume series. Oda’s early art style is rougher than later volumes. Box set is heavy.
Naruto Box Set 1: Volumes 1-27

Naruto Box Set 1: Volumes 1-27

Classic shonen manga that defined a generation. 27 volumes with tons of extras (poster, stickers, trading card). Covers the best early arcs: Chunin Exams, Sasuke Retrieval. No filler episodes like the anime.
Only Part 1 of Naruto. You need two more box sets to finish Shippuden. 27 volumes is a big commitment upfront.
My Hero Academia Box Set 1 (Vol. 1-20)

My Hero Academia Box Set 1 (Vol. 1-20)

Great entry point covering the best arcs. Exclusive booklet with bonus art. Perfect for kids who already love the anime. Superhero genre makes it accessible for Marvel/DC fans.
Only covers volumes 1-20 of a 40+ volume series. You will need to buy remaining volumes separately. Box is bulky for shelf storage.

For a Collector

Before you buy, find out the last volume they own. Look at the shelf, or ask someone who can. Duplicates are the classic manga gift mistake, and box sets make it an expensive one.

Finished stories in one box are the cleanest gifts. Demon Slayer is 23 volumes with a booklet and a poster. The Jujutsu Kaisen set, out since October 27, 2026, holds 31 books. Fullmetal Alchemist comes with a bonus novel. Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen are dark stories, so check what is in each show if you are buying for a younger reader.

Jujutsu Kaisen Complete Box Set (Vol. 0-30)

Jujutsu Kaisen Complete Box Set (Vol. 0-30)

The whole story in one box, prequel volume 0 included. Cheaper than buying 31 single volumes at list price
Expensive, even discounted
Fullmetal Alchemist Complete Box Set

Fullmetal Alchemist Complete Box Set

Complete story in one box, no waiting. Includes a bonus novel. Widely considered one of the best manga series ever made. Perfect companion to Brotherhood anime.
27 volumes is a significant investment upfront. The manga and Brotherhood anime cover the same story, so owning both may feel redundant.

Dragon Ball is split into two boxes: volumes 1 to 16, then the Dragon Ball Z box for the rest of the story. Our Dragon Ball reading order explains the split.

Dragon Ball Complete Box Set (Vol. 1-16)

Dragon Ball Complete Box Set (Vol. 1-16)

Complete original series in one purchase. Includes exclusive poster and booklet. Great value compared to buying volumes individually. This is where the entire Dragon Ball story begins.
Box sets are bulky if shelf space is limited. Some prefer the 3-in-1 omnibus format for portability.
Dragon Ball Z Complete Box Set (Vol. 1-26)

Dragon Ball Z Complete Box Set (Vol. 1-26)

The complete DBZ manga in one set. Includes Toriyama interview in the booklet. Covers all the iconic sagas: Saiyan, Frieza, Cell, and Buu. This is where Dragon Ball Daima picks up from.
26 volumes is a significant investment. Heavy box set. Note: The manga is just called ‘Dragon Ball’. The Z branding was only for the anime.

For a fan partway through a long series, buy the next box. One Piece runs through Box Set 2 (volumes 24 to 46), Box Set 3 (47 to 70), Box Set 4 (71 to 90) and Box Set 5 (91 to 111).

One Piece Box Set 2: Skypiea and Water Seven (Vol. 24-46)

One Piece Box Set 2: Skypiea and Water Seven (Vol. 24-46)

Contains the Water Seven and Enies Lobby arcs, widely considered the best in One Piece. Emotional depth increases dramatically. The crew bonds are tested and strengthened.
Skypiea arc at the start is polarizing (some love it, some find it slow). 23 volumes is a big commitment. Story complexity increases significantly.
One Piece Box Set 3: Thriller Bark to New World (Vol. 47-70)

One Piece Box Set 3: Thriller Bark to New World (Vol. 47-70)

The Paramount War arc is one of the greatest arcs in manga history. Includes the 48-page mini-comic bonus. Stakes reach their highest point. Sabaody introduces game-changing world-building.
Thriller Bark at the start is lighter in tone. Contains some of the most emotionally heavy content in the series. 24 volumes is a large set.
One Piece Box Set 4: Dressrosa to Reverie (Vol. 71-90)

One Piece Box Set 4: Dressrosa to Reverie (Vol. 71-90)

Four major arcs in one set. Dressrosa has incredible action. Whole Cake Island introduces Big Mom. The world-building reaches its deepest level.
Dressrosa arc is long (over 100 chapters). Some readers find the pacing slow in places. Not the end of the series, volumes 91+ still continue.
One Piece Box Set 5: Wano to Egghead (Vol. 91-111)

One Piece Box Set 5: Wano to Egghead (Vol. 91-111)

All of Wano in one set. 21 volumes, picks up right where Box Set 4 ends
Pre-order until December 8, 2026

Naruto finishes with Box Set 2 (volumes 28 to 48) and Box Set 3 (49 to 72). Bleach starts with Box Set 1 (volumes 1 to 21) and ends with Box Set 3 (49 to 74).

Naruto Box Set 2: Volumes 28-48

Naruto Box Set 2: Volumes 28-48

Covers the start of Shippuden, where the story matures. Includes the original pilot mini-comic. Characters grow up and stakes get higher. Better pacing than the anime with no filler.
Requires Box Set 1 first. 21 volumes is a big middle chunk. Some of the best arcs (Pain, War) are in Box Set 3.
Naruto Box Set 3: Volumes 49-72

Naruto Box Set 3: Volumes 49-72

Completes the entire series. Contains the most emotionally powerful arcs. The Naruto vs Sasuke finale is worth the journey. No filler, just pure story.
Requires Box Sets 1 and 2 first. The war arc drags in places. 24 volumes is the largest of the three sets.
Bleach Box Set 1: Volumes 1-21

Bleach Box Set 1: Volumes 1-21

The Soul Society arc is one of the best arcs in shonen manga. Iconic character designs and sword fights. 21 volumes is a manageable starting point. Art style is distinctive and cool.
Bleach is the most violent of the Big Three. Sword combat with blood. Some horror-adjacent imagery with Hollows. Not for kids under 13.
Bleach Box Set 3: Volumes 49-74

Bleach Box Set 3: Volumes 49-74

Completes the entire Bleach series. The Thousand-Year Blood War arc was adapted into the acclaimed new anime. Includes author interview and cover art gallery. 26 volumes to finish the story.
Volumes 49-54 are Fullbring, the bridge. TYBW starts at 55, so skip 1 and 2 if they already know the old anime. The manga ending felt rushed; the new anime expands some of those scenes.

Some series have no box at all. My son owns all 37 English volumes of Black Clover. There is no official English box set, and he is waiting on volume 38, due August 3, 2027. A pre-order is the gift for a fan like that. Our Black Clover gift guide covers that one.

Check Box Set Deals before you buy. Prices on these move around Black Friday.

Reading Gear

For a reader who already has the books, gear is the gift that gets used. Book lights do at our house. For small paperbacks read late, a clip-on or a neck light is the right kind.

A neck light leaves both hands free and has no clip to slide off a thin paperback. A clip-on is simpler and takes up less room. Our book light guide goes through the differences. For more ideas, see our book accessories page.

Glocusent Book Light, 3-Color & 6-Brightness Reading Light, Bendable Neck Light, 80-hr Lasting Rechargeable Lamp, Perfect Book Light for Reading in Bed, Knitting, Camping, Repairing, Book Lovers Gifts

Glocusent Book Light, 3-Color & 6-Brightness Reading Light, Bendable Neck Light, 80-hr Lasting Rechargeable Lamp, Perfect Book Light for Reading in Bed, Knitting, Camping, Repairing, Book Lovers Gifts

Available in two styles (the Bookmark Style and the Neck Reading Light) this light adapts to your reading preferences. The Bookmark Style is a featherweight at just 1.41 oz, clipping securely onto your books with a flexible neck that ensures your pages are illuminated without obstruction. The Neck Reading Light offers hands-free convenience, wrapping comfortably around your neck for ultimate flexibility.. With three color temperatures: Amber (1800K), Breezy (3400K), and Precise (6000K) and multiple brightness levels, you can tailor the light to suit any reading environment.
While the Glocusent Book Light is nearly perfect, there are a couple of minor issues to note. The buttons on the neck light can be overly sensitive, leading to accidental setting changes. Additionally, turning off the neck light requires cycling through all brightness levels for each arm, which can be a bit cumbersome.

Box sets also eat shelf space, so heavy bookends are a practical add-on once the volumes come out of the box.

MaxGear Extra Large Heavy Duty Metal Bookends

Plain black with no decoration

Pandapark Wood Bookends

For the Fan Who Draws

My daughter draws anime, and she has used how-to-draw books and sketchbooks. If the reader sketches the characters, this is a gift they will pick up more than once. I can’t vouch for every book on the market, so these are three with strong buyer reviews.

The Master Guide to Drawing Anime by Christopher Hart is the well-known starter, with thousands of reviews. How to Draw Manga: Basics and Beyond is another solid first book. Draw Like a Mangaka is a newer beginner guide. Add a plain sketchbook and you have a gift they can open and use the same day.

What to Skip

“Complete sets” of a series with no official box set. They are bundles of single volumes from third-party sellers, often marked up.

Anything from a seller you cannot identify at a price far below VIZ’s. A real 23-volume box is heavy and expensive to ship.

Duplicates, which is why you check the shelf first. Two copies of volume 12 helps nobody.

About These Recommendations

I’m George, a dad of two. My wife did most of the reading to our kids when they were little, and I did my share. She’s a therapist, and she helps pick the books that actually matter for their development. Some of what’s on this site we’ve read, watched or played as a family. Some I tried on my own first. The rest comes from research: reviews, episode guides, other parents online, and whatever the kids bring home from school.

FAQ

What do you buy someone who likes manga?

A box set of the series they love is the best big gift. If you do not know what they own, get volume 1 of a finished series, a book light, or a how-to-draw book.

Is a manga box set a good gift?

Yes, if you know the series and what they already own. A box set is good value compared with single volumes. Check the shelf first, since duplicates are the common mistake.

What are the best manga box sets?

For finished stories, Demon Slayer (23 volumes), Fullmetal Alchemist and Jujutsu Kaisen (31 books) are complete in one box. For long series, start with One Piece Box Set 1 or Naruto Box Set 1.

What manga should a beginner start with?

Pick something tied to a show they already like, or a finished series so they can see the story through. Volume 1 is a cheap test before buying more.

What do you get a manga fan who owns everything?

A good book light, heavy bookends, a how-to-draw book, or a pre-order of the next volume in the series they are following.

How can I tell a manga box set is official?

Look for the publisher’s name, usually VIZ Media, in the listing. Be careful with complete sets of series that have no official box, since those are bundles of single volumes from third-party sellers.
