Home » Studio Ghibli Gifts for Kids, Sorted by Age

My son watched Spirited Away at 7. We rate it 8+, and that one-year gap is why this page is sorted by age. A Ghibli gift is usually a way into a film, so it should match a film the kid is ready for.

Most Ghibli gift lists are written for adult fans, with Princess Mononoke steelbooks sitting next to Totoro plush. This one uses the same three bands as our Studio Ghibli age guide: 6+, 8+ and 12+. Find your kid’s band first. The gifts follow from the films in it.

The Short Answer

  • Ages 6 and 7: My Neighbor Totoro on Blu-ray, plus the Totoro picture book. Totoro is 6+ in our Anime Finder, and the book retells the film with frames from the movie.
  • Ages 8 to 11: a Ghibli film comic, or The Art of Spirited Away for a kid who draws. Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky and Howl’s Moving Castle are all 8+.
  • 12 and up: Princess Mononoke on Blu-ray with The Art of Princess Mononoke. Mononoke is our firmest rating at 12+.
  • The whole family: there is no current complete Ghibli box set in the US. Buy the single GKIDS Blu-ray + DVD discs for the films your kids are ready for.
My Neighbor Totoro Picture Book (New Edition)

My Neighbor Totoro Picture Book (New Edition)

The entire Totoro story as a picture book with frames taken directly from the film. Perfect for young kids (ages 6+) as an introduction to Ghibli. Includes character guide and village map.
Not a traditional picture book with original illustrations. Uses movie stills, which some parents prefer and others find less charming than hand-drawn art.

Studio Ghibli Gifts for Ages 6 and Up

Four Ghibli films sit at 6+ in the Finder: My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service and The Cat Returns. Totoro and Ponyo have no villain at all, which makes them the easy first films. Kiki has a sad stretch in the middle where she loses her magic, and it’s worth knowing about before movie night.

Blu-rays

GKIDS took over the Ghibli films in North America in 2017, and with Shout! Factory it sells each one as a Blu-ray + DVD combo. That is the edition to buy. Totoro and Kiki are both in stock in that format. Ponyo and Kiki are also out as limited-edition steelbooks, which cost more for the same film. The metal case matters to collectors far more than to a six-year-old. Why own the disc at all? Ghibli streams on HBO Max in the US, but streaming rights have moved around for years. A disc stays put.

My Neighbor Totoro (Blu-ray + DVD, GKIDS)

My Neighbor Totoro (Blu-ray + DVD, GKIDS)

English dub plus the original Japanese audio with subtitles. Blu-ray and DVD discs in one case
Single film, not a collection
Kiki’s Delivery Service (Blu-ray + DVD, GKIDS)

Kiki’s Delivery Service (Blu-ray + DVD, GKIDS)

English dub plus the original Japanese audio with subtitles. Blu-ray and DVD discs in one case
Single film, not a collection

Picture books and a cookbook

The VIZ picture books retell each film using frames from the movie, with the story printed underneath. There are picture books for Totoro, Kiki and Ponyo. Amazon shoppers put the Totoro book at ages 2 to 5, so it runs young. Buy it with the film for a 6-year-old who wants to stay in that world a bit longer after the credits.

My Neighbor Totoro: The Official Cookbook came out from VIZ in 2025. It’s a cook-together gift. Nobody’s six-year-old is making anything in it alone.

My Neighbor Totoro: The Official Cookbook

My Neighbor Totoro: The Official Cookbook

Officially licensed by Studio Ghibli. Recipes tied to scenes from the film
Some recipes need Japanese ingredients you may have to order

Plush, puzzles and toys

Official Ghibli plush in the US comes through Bandai Namco, which sells the Sun Arrow and Ensky lines on Amazon. Look for the 5-inch Totoro holding a leaf, the fluffy gray Totoro and a small Ponyo. Read the box before you buy for a little one. These are sold as collectibles, and the Amazon listings carry a 15+ age label plus a small-parts warning for under 3.

Studio Ghibli Official Totoro with Leaf Plush (5 inch)

Studio Ghibli Official Totoro with Leaf Plush (5 inch)

Official licensed Ghibli merchandise, not a knockoff. Small enough for a stocking or a backpack
The listing is marked 15+ and carries a choking warning for children under 3
Studio Ghibli Official Ponyo Plush (Small)

Studio Ghibli Official Ponyo Plush (Small)

Official licensed Ghibli merchandise, not a knockoff. Small enough for a stocking
The listing is marked 15+ and carries a choking warning for children under 3

I’d treat them as bedside and shelf friends for school-age kids, and keep them away from toddlers.

The Ensky Nap with Totoro jigsaw has 108 pieces, which is a reasonable first puzzle to do together. Ensky also makes Totoro nesting dolls. Both have the same collector age label.

Studio Ghibli Gifts for Ages 8 and Up

At 8+ the bigger films open up: Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Howl’s Moving Castle and Whisper of the Heart. Castle in the Sky has soldiers and guns. Spirited Away has the scene where Chihiro’s parents turn into pigs, and Howl’s keeps a war running in the background. The Which Ghibli film next path in the age guide puts them in the order I’d follow.

My son saw Spirited Away a year under our rating. If your kid is 7 and asking for it, the Spirited Away age rating guide walks through the scenes that matter.

Blu-rays

Castle in the Sky and Howl’s Moving Castle are both in stock as GKIDS Blu-ray + DVD combos, and for Spirited Away the new limited steelbook is the easiest edition to find right now.

Castle in the Sky (Blu-ray + DVD, GKIDS)

Castle in the Sky (Blu-ray + DVD, GKIDS)

English dub plus the original Japanese audio with subtitles. Blu-ray and DVD discs in one case
Soldiers, guns and long chase scenes, more action than the 6+ films
Howl’s Moving Castle (Blu-ray + DVD, GKIDS)

Howl’s Moving Castle (Blu-ray + DVD, GKIDS)

English dub plus the original Japanese audio with subtitles. Blu-ray and DVD discs in one case
War imagery and some scary transformations

Film comics

This is the gift I’d pick for 8 to 11. A VIZ film comic turns the whole movie into a comic, using the film’s own frames with speech bubbles added. The All-in-One editions fit the entire film in one book. There are All-in-One editions for Spirited Away, Totoro and Ponyo. My kids switched to subtitles around 10, once they could read fast enough to keep up. That’s about the age a film comic becomes an easy read too, since every panel is a frame they’ve already seen. A kid who reads manga will be at home in one.

My Neighbor Totoro Film Comic: All-in-One Edition

My Neighbor Totoro Film Comic: All-in-One Edition

Full story in one book, read right to left like manga. Uses actual frames from the film
It retells the film rather than adding new story
Spirited Away Film Comic: All-in-One Edition

Spirited Away Film Comic: All-in-One Edition

Full story in one book, read right to left like manga. Uses actual frames from the film
Includes the same scary moments as the film, like the parents turning into pigs

Art books

For a kid who draws, The Art of Spirited Away is the one. It’s a large hardcover of concept art, storyboards and production notes, and it includes the full English script. VIZ also publishes The Art of My Neighbor Totoro and The Art of Howl’s Moving Castle.

The catch is that it’s a book about making a film. A kid who doesn’t draw may flip through it once and shelve it.

The Art of Spirited Away

The Art of Spirited Away

Gorgeous hardcover art book with concept art, storyboards, color stills, and production notes from the Oscar-winning film. Includes complete English script. Coffee table quality.
Focuses only on Spirited Away, not all Ghibli films. Published in 2002 so the printing quality varies by edition.

Studio Ghibli Gifts for Ages 12 and Up

Princess Mononoke and The Boy and the Heron are the two 12+ Ghibli films in the Finder. Mononoke is the one parents most often show too early, because it’s animated and it’s Ghibli. Arms come off. A boar god rots on screen. For a kid who has worked through the 8+ films and is turning 12, Mononoke on Blu-ray is a real step up, and the Princess Mononoke age guide covers the scenes in detail.

Princess Mononoke (Blu-ray + DVD, GKIDS)

Princess Mononoke (Blu-ray + DVD, GKIDS)

English dub plus the original Japanese audio with subtitles. Blu-ray and DVD discs in one case
Graphic violence by animation standards, including severed limbs

The Boy and the Heron is Miyazaki’s most recent film, and it opens with a mother dying in a fire. GKIDS sells it on Blu-ray + DVD and in a 4K edition. Save it for a kid who is fine with a strange, sad story that never fully explains itself.

Art books and postcards

The Art of Princess Mononoke is the VIZ hardcover of the film’s concept art and production notes. It doesn’t soften the film, so it belongs with a kid who has already seen it.

The Art of Princess Mononoke

The Art of Princess Mononoke

VIZ hardcover of the concept art and production notes. This is the film book, not a picture book.
An art book, not the movie, and not a softer version of it. The film is still PG-13.

Studio Ghibli: 100 Collectible Postcards, from Chronicle Books, has a final frame from each film. Volume 2 runs through The Boy and the Heron. They fit in a stocking, and a teen can put them on a wall or actually mail one.

Is There a Studio Ghibli Blu-ray Box Set?

Not a current one. The only official US box is The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki, which Disney released in 2015 as an Amazon exclusive. It has 11 Miyazaki films, from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind to The Wind Rises. It went out of print after GKIDS took over the North American rights, so the copies on Amazon now are leftover stock and the price jumps around.

It’s also an odd gift for a kid. The box runs from Totoro at 6+ to Princess Mononoke at 12+ and The Wind Rises, which we put at 13+. It has nothing Ghibli made outside Miyazaki, so The Cat Returns and Whisper of the Heart aren’t in it, and The Boy and the Heron came out years later.

Be careful with listings called “The Master Blu-ray Collection” or similar. Those are usually seller bundles of single discs, not a studio set.

Skip the box.

Buy the GKIDS discs one film at a time, starting with the films your kid is ready for, and add the next when they get there.

How to Tell Official Ghibli Merch From Knockoffs

A lot of what gets sold as Ghibli merch is unlicensed. For toys, look for Sun Arrow, Ensky, Benelic or Bandai Namco on the listing and on the box. US discs say GKIDS and Shout! Factory. In English, VIZ Media publishes the official picture books, film comics and art books, and Chronicle Books does the postcards.

Books get copied too. There is an unofficial Studio Ghibli cookbook on Amazon. The word is in its subtitle, and it is easy to grab instead of the official Totoro one. A fan-made sticker is fine. For anything a kid sleeps with or chews on, I’d stick with the licensed makers.

What’s Next

Not sure which films your kid is ready for? The Studio Ghibli age guide rates every Ghibli film, with the scenes that catch parents out.

When they want TV anime after Ghibli, the Anime Finder filters shows by age and interest. For manga box sets and art books from other series, see anime gifts for kids 10 to 13.

Everything else is on the Anime and Manga hub.

About These Recommendations

I’m George, a dad of two. My wife did most of the reading to our kids when they were little, and I did my share. She’s a therapist, and she helps pick the books that actually matter for their development. Some of what’s on this site we’ve read, watched or played as a family. Some I tried on my own first. The rest comes from research: reviews, episode guides, other parents online, and whatever the kids bring home from school.

FAQ

What is a good Studio Ghibli gift for a 6-year-old?

My Neighbor Totoro on Blu-ray with the VIZ Totoro picture book. Totoro is rated 6+ in our Anime Finder, along with Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service and The Cat Returns. A small official Totoro plush also works for a school-age kid, but read the box first, since most carry a small-parts warning for under 3.

Is there a Studio Ghibli Blu-ray box set?

Not a current one in the US. The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki (Disney, 2015) has 11 Miyazaki films but is out of print, and it leaves out The Boy and the Heron and every Ghibli film not directed by Miyazaki. GKIDS and Shout! Factory now sell each film as its own Blu-ray + DVD combo.

Is a Totoro plush safe for a toddler?

Not the official collectible ones. Totoro plush from Sun Arrow and Bandai Namco carries a 15+ age label on Amazon and a choking warning for children under 3. Treat them as gifts for older kids.

How can I tell if Ghibli merch is official?

Check the maker. Official toys come from Sun Arrow, Ensky, Benelic and Bandai Namco. US discs come from GKIDS and Shout! Factory. English books come from VIZ Media and Chronicle Books. A listing that says “inspired by” or names no maker is usually unlicensed.

Should I buy the Ghibli steelbook or the regular Blu-ray?

For a young kid, the regular Blu-ray + DVD combo. It costs less and has the same film. Steelbooks are limited reprints with new art on a metal case, so they suit a collector or a teen’s shelf.

What is a good Studio Ghibli gift for a teenager?

Princess Mononoke on Blu-ray with The Art of Princess Mononoke, if they have already seen the 8+ films. We rate Mononoke and The Boy and the Heron 12+. For a teen who draws, any of the VIZ art books.
