My daughter stopped talking for about ten minutes after Rengoku died. Just sat there on the couch, staring at the screen. Then she said, “I hate Akaza.” Two episodes later she said, “Actually, I kind of get why he did it.” That is what makes Akaza one of the best villains in anime. He earns both reactions.
If your teen loves Akaza, they are not rooting for the bad guy. They are connecting with a tragic character who lost everything and became something he would have hated. That is exactly why Akaza merch sells. Fans want to own a piece of that story.
I have watched Mugen Train more times than I planned to. Here is what is worth buying and what to skip.
The Manga: Akaza’s Key Volumes
Akaza appears across several arcs, but two moments define him. You do not need all 23 volumes to get his story.
Volume 8 (Chapters 63-69): The Mugen Train Fight
This is where Akaza first appears. He shows up after Enmu is defeated and immediately fights Rengoku. The fight is brutal, fast, and ends with one of the most iconic deaths in the series. If your teen watched the Mugen Train movie and wants to read it, this is the volume.
Volume 18 (Chapters 149-157): The Backstory and Final Fight
This is the volume. Akaza fights Tanjiro and Giyu in the Infinity Castle, and his full backstory as Hakuji is revealed. He was a human martial artist who fought to protect his sick father and his fiancee Koyuki. They were poisoned. He killed 67 people with his bare fists. Muzan found him.
Volume 18 has Akaza on the cover (his human form). It is the single best Akaza gift if you are buying one book. The backstory chapters hit harder than Rengoku’s death. That is not an exaggeration.
The Complete Box Set
If your teen wants the full story, the box set (all 23 volumes) regularly drops to around $110 on Amazon. Less than $5 per volume. Includes an exclusive booklet and poster.
Stories of Water and Flame (Spin-off)
This short spin-off manga focuses on Rengoku and Giyu. Akaza appears briefly. Worth it if your teen is into the Rengoku-Akaza rivalry, but it is not an Akaza book.
Figures and Collectibles
Budget Tier: Under $20
Funko Pop Akaza ($12-15). The safe gift. Your teen probably already has Funko Pops from other franchises. Akaza looks good next to their Tanjiro or Nezuko Pop. Not detailed, not meant to be. It is the gift you add to a birthday card.
Mid Tier: $25-40
Banpresto Demon Series Akaza ($25-35). This is the sweet spot for a teen gift. About 6 inches tall, good detail, officially licensed. Banpresto prize figures are what anime figure collectors recommend as a starting point because the quality-to-price ratio is hard to beat.
Banpresto Vibration Stars Akaza ($25-35). Same price range, dynamic action pose. If your teen cares about how a figure looks on a shelf, this one has more energy than the standard standing pose.
Premium Tier: $50+
Figuarts Zero Akaza ($50-70). The display piece. Fixed pose, detailed base, about 7 inches tall. This is the figure most anime figure communities recommend for Akaza. Not a toy. It sits on a shelf and looks impressive.
If your teen is a serious collector, there are figures in the $100-250+ range from Aniplex and Kotobukiya. But for most teens, the $25-70 range covers everything they actually want.
Apparel
Akaza Graphic T-Shirts ($15-25). Multiple designs available on Amazon. Look for officially licensed tags (Bioworld, Ripple Junction) to avoid prints that fade after three washes. Akaza’s Upper Rank Three design and his Destructive Death martial arts poses are the most popular shirt designs.
The UNIQLO x Demon Slayer collaboration has included villain designs in past drops. These sell out fast at retail ($15-25) and show up on eBay at markup afterward. Worth checking UNIQLO’s site if a current wave is running, but do not pay resale prices.
The Rengoku Rivalry Set
Akaza fans almost always also care about Rengoku. The Mugen Train fight defined both characters. Buying an Akaza figure without a Rengoku figure next to it feels incomplete.
Pair a Banpresto Akaza ($25-35) with a Banpresto Rengoku ($25-35) for a $50-70 display set. Same product line, same scale, same shelf. The rivalry on display. If your teen watches the Mugen Train fight on repeat (mine does), this is the gift that shows you were paying attention.
For the manga version: Volume 8 (the fight) paired with Volume 18 (the backstory). Two volumes, two sides of the story. Under $20 total.
What to Skip
Bootleg figures. Akaza figures are heavily bootlegged on Amazon. If a detailed figure is under $15 from a brand you have never heard of, it is fake. The paint will chip, the joints will break. Look for the Bandai Namco warning label on the box for Banpresto figures. Buy from Amazon directly or authorized sellers.
Overpriced “limited edition” figures. Some sellers list discontinued figures at 3-4x retail price. If someone is asking $200 for a figure that originally retailed for $35, that is speculation, not value. Your teen will not care about the price tag. They care about how it looks.
Cheap iron-on decal shirts. A lot of the sub-$10 Akaza shirts on Amazon are heat-press decals on blank tees. The print cracks and peels after a few washes. Spend the extra $5-10 for officially licensed apparel from Bioworld or Ripple Junction.
